Our design for artist Ghada Amer’s studio sits on the ruins of a burned-down church on Frederick Douglass Boulevard in West Harlem. Our intervention involved the adaptation and transformation of the existing structure into a home, art studio, gallery, and social gathering space for Amer and her partner. Continue reading SO – IL

This project is a private residence located in Wye River, a small coastal town located along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. The project was one of three Probono projects undertaken by MGAO after the 2015 Bushfires. Our clients have a long historical connection to the Wye River, with a family connection to a man named Paddy Harrington, one of the original builders who constructed many of the town’s early Fibro Beach Shacks. The house is situated in a neighbourhood comprising primarily detached single-family homes. The site occupied by the house is situated at a higher elevation in relation to the rest of the residential street. The site orientation allows for it to enjoy good views out.
Due to being a compact site, we decided to minimise the footprint of the building and tuck it away in the corner of the plot, freeing up the rest of the ground for a well-oriented garden.
The result is a square ground plan divided into four quadrants of varying sizes organised around a void with a feature staircase in it. The living spaces are organised in a fluid manner at split levels moving from public areas connected with the garden level to more private areas at the higher levels. Continue reading RipollTizon

The existing Victorian semi-detached house is an interesting collage of disparate elements, materials and shapes, all unified by a simple timber beam painted white. We repeated this method of composition – collage unified by a simple beam – to the rear of the house to instil a conversation between old and new rather than a simple contrast.
