This “Folie Architecturale of the 21st century” was mainly the brainchild of an encounter between Japan and the Mediterranean. The cross-cultural endeavour embodies modern Montpellier. It is also an interchange between two generations of architects, with Japanese firm Sou Fujimoto at the state of its art and the young French generation represented by Manal Rachdi Oxo Architects and Nicolas Laisné Associés. Other firms were brought in to take part in this one-of-a-kind venture: Montpellier developers Promeo Patrimoine and Evolis Promotion, local stakeholders who will ensure this iconic project will represent success for the entire region. The Miyawaki Building is an unassuming 3-storey European-style brick building dating from 1932. For the past 40 years it had been operating as a restaurant, but was recently purchased by Kawasaki Brand Design. The 31-year old owner, Rikihiro Kawasaki, originally had plans to demolish the building and replace it with a high-rise tower designed by architect Sou Fujimoto. Continue reading Sou Fujimoto

The shape of the outer shell respects the scale of the built environment. At key points, it departs from the building boundary lines and, together with the neighboring buildings, forms generously dimensioned access areas. The Village Vertical officially designated as the winning project for the Inventons la Métropole du Grand Paris competition for the Rosny-sous-Bois site. The project was designed by architecture studios Sou Fujimoto, Nicolas Laisné and Dimitri Roussel in collaboration with landscape and urban designers from Atelier Georges.
