The landscape of Jøssingfjord is dominated by a unique geology, coastal areas are mainly composed of anorthosite, a rock type that only occurs in such large total quantities in one other place on Earth, but the rock is more common on the moon. The area became part of a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2016, which comprises single unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education, and sustainable development. Anorthosite is a hard rock, but the glaciers of the Ice Age have given it its characteristic appearance of polished rocks with soft shapes and long scars. The soft shapes appear in contrast with angular and pointed boulders that have fallen from the rock’s face. Continue reading LCLA office
