Studiolo is an investigation into the idea of the private room. The concept of a room, while seemingly ubiquitous in architecture, is often taken for granted in both our everyday lives and architectural endeavors. As dwellers and architects, we inherently engage with rooms, crafting and inhabiting them without much contemplation. An investigation into the possibilities that spatial systems have in the dissolution of domestic conventions. The project consists of the renovation of an existing 130-sqm apartment into a double dwelling in a 1970s building. Casa Gracia derives from a doppelgänger distribution, resulting in two almost symmetrical apartments with visually equal perspectives, producing a series of hexagonal rooms indifferent to their program or orientation. The average cost of a home in Madrid is beyond the reach of most people, a crisis which is defining the lives of many generations. The project is located in the rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood of Carabanchel, where, due to the affordable housing crisis the city is currently suffering, many citizens are moving to.
