This house is located in an old residential area in Fukui City that was carved out of a mountain half a century ago. Fukui’s climate is dark with a lot of rain and snow in winter and low sunlight. The owners, a young couple, were attracted to the slope and purchased the land. They wanted bright, open homes and covered parking. In this plan, we wanted to bring out the latent potential of open living spaces and sloped land in areas with heavy snowfall. We also wanted to demonstrate once again the value of a mature housing complex.

To reach the site, climb the slope while looking at the greenery of the mountain in front of you. Standing at the southern end of the newly created site, you can see the faded and calm cityscape and mountain range beyond the slope that climbs through the gaps between the houses surrounding it. Therefore, we incorporated this experience into the premises, creating a structure where you climb up five spaces created by steps that are offset by half a floor. Each space has an opening toward the surrounding void, connecting it with the natural environment beyond.
We aimed to create a rich living space born from the uniqueness of this location, with a structure and structure that echoes the slope.
