The topography of the Bruderholz district of Basel is characterized by a slope upwards to the south while the overall morphology of the built environment of this quarter of the city is open. The building plot is an area formerly used for road maintenance loading and unloading and is situated at the rear of an important access road with a beautiful avenue of trees. With a steeply rising incline, northern orientation, many existing trees, and difficult access at the rear, the site, in short, posed every conceivable challenge. For the competition entry we focused on issues concerning unbuilt or open spaces and exposure to light developing three geometrically different floors concave-shaped towards the outside.
Diminishing towards the top the open spaces of this footprint become the balconies. The topography is mirrored in a subtle way and each of the six apartments corresponds to the surroundings in a specific way. The convex forms in the interior each refer to the exterior environment and create very striking dwelling spaces that agreeably capture light and sun. Executed in wood, the façade appears as ivory-white standing formwork while the horizontal band is realized in copper.
The project impressively demonstrates how a clever concept can be used to enliven a site that is basically unsuitable for building – without destroying resources through demolition – and thereby create urgently needed housing in a sought-after urban quarter in Basel.

Das Basler Stadtquartier Bruderholz ist geprägt durch eine nach Süden ansteigende Topographie. Die Morphologie des Quartier ist durch offene Bebauungen geprägt. Der Bauplatz ist ein ehemaliger Umschlagplatz für den Strassenunterhalt im Rückraum einer wichtigen Erschliessungsstrasse mit einer schönen Baumallee, ein Ort mit stark ansteigender Topographie, nordorientiert, viele Bestandesbäume, schwierige Erschliessung im rückwärtigen Raum: kurz, alle auch nur erdenklichen Herausforderungen. Unser Projekt fokussierte im Wettbewerb die Frage der Freiräume und Belichtung mit drei geometrisch unterschiedlichen nach aussen konkaven Geschossen. So werden die Freiflächen der nach oben sich verkleinernden Fussabdrücke zu Balkonen. Die Topographie wird subtil aufgenommen, die einzelnen der sechs Wohnungen haben jeweils einen spezifischen Bezug zum Aussenraum. Die im Innenraum verweisen die konvexen Formen jeweils in den Aussenraum und schaffen sehr qualitätvolle Wohnräume, die auf überzeugende Weise Licht und Sonne einfangen. Die konstruktive Umsetzung erfolgt in Holz, die Fassade zeigt sich als elfenbeinweisse stehende Schalung, die horizontal Bänderung ist als Kupferbänderung entwickelt. Das Projekt zeigt auf eindrückliche Weise, wie über ein kluges Konzept ein grundsätzlich zum Bauen ungeeignetes Grundstück - ohne Vernichtung von Ressourcen über Abbrüche – aktiviert werden kann und so in einem gesuchten Stadtquartier in Basel dringend benötigter Wohnraum geschaffen wird.
