This proposal for a library in Hyde Park is an interpretation of the future function of the library. It is a social place, a place where people gather to receive cultural impulses, not necessarily limited to those of the written word. In addition to the program of the library, the proposal adds two flexible and multiuse spaces for other cultural activities and events; a neutral and closed space to be used for exhibitions; a covered pavilion for music and theatre in dialogue with the internal patio and the lake.

The project is bases itself on a wooden module of three by three meters. The ephemeral and changeable nature of Hyde park with its annual Winter Wonderland and Serpentine Pavilion inspired a changeable and moveable structure. The idea is that the functions of the library can be placed anywhere in the park providing a platform for cultural activities that can change location and composition as needed. The roof structure can be taken off and re-used on the ground as informal benches.

The proposed form creates an enclosed patio. All entrances are from the internal courtyard and a combination of solid walls and brise soleil provide the outside facade. Two glass boxes face each other, one containing the library, the other a bar. The open pavilion can close in bad weather, providing sheltering walls as well as a canopy for the audience. The closed exhibition space can open with pivot doors to the patio, createing a seamless flow between the outside and inside space.
