In order to accommodate the Rectorate of the Academy of Créteil, we sought to imagine a building that would balance expressionism and pragmatism.
We believe that the project should, in fact, rediscover that breath of modernity of the buildings that make up the landscape of Créteil, while managing to create a new identity.
The materialisation of the project is, in this respect, essential. Concrete, of which we appreciate the plastic quality, would be too connoted; wood as a cladding material for the façade would risk being too fragile, both from a technical and a symbolic standpoint. In the harbour area a narrow stretch of land along a dock is freed from port activities. A very simple ‘chop stick’ urban plan is developed by O.M.A. in which green open pockets alternate with dense construction. In order to offer a notion of centrality to the linear plan, a public path is meant to cross the whole strip. The site for the school faces one green area at its south side, the dock on its west side, a square and a housing block on the north and the harbour road on the east. Continue reading XDGA

The new building replaces a complex of modernist building volumes that used to occupy the entire site and could not be adapted to today’s sustainability standards.
As the Antwerp city centre has few public green surfaces, the transformation of the site from a merely private, mineral and infrastructural area into a public garden is a crucial requirement of the competition brief. Surrounded by fragments of public green, the parcel is key to the formation of a larger, coherent park. Another – contradictory – demand was to maintain a more recent representational pavilion, which was positioned as an obstacle in between the fragments.

Close to the other EU Institutional buildings, the LOI130 project is to become the Administrative Headquarters of the EU.
