The competition for a pavilion to host a week of events for an architecture festival called for the temporary occupation of an empty lot in the old quarters of Valencia. Upon studying the site, we learnt that the neighbors were campaigning to keep the property from being built and wanted to turn it permanently into a park. Our proposal consists of a light structure—a hacked greenhouse kit of parts—with a garden inside of it. After the festival activities are over, the greenhouse structure will be reused as a nursery for the Parks Department, while the garden will stay behind as an act of guerrilla urbanism to aid the neighbors in their campaign. This playground is located in Balsa de Ves, a village with a population of 131. As such, it is a product of the particular conditions that drive the existence of small and decaying municipalities in Spain, an inevitably ambiguous and paradoxical form of the urban. It sits on the land that was once occupied by the school. Demolished in 2019, the building was devoted to multiple uses but education since the school closed in 1972. But still, children remain the target audience; the playground addresses a segment of the population that lacks in the village. Continue reading rellam
