Three Landscape Essays: Mobile Ecosystems for Future Climates . MADRID

Three Landscape Essays is a pilot project that tests strategies to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis in Southern-european public space. Different phenomena–including recent heat waves and prolonged droughts, alongside the normalization of extreme weather phenomena such as snowfall or torrential rains–, highlight the lack of preparedness of southern European cities for the evolving climate crisis. These new conditions compel us to rethink our public space. In urban areas, a widespread lack of shade and an increase in temperatures due to impermeable surfaces and a scarcity of plant species softening the effects of heat, urge us to resort to new imaginaries. Far from a limitation, this crisis offers the opportunity to reconsider public space as a meeting place for diversity, a site of comfort for individuals from the same or different species, a node of convergence for different worldviews beyond the human. Un cuarto en llamas (A room on fire) . MADRID

Un cuarto en llamas (A room on fire) is a space for dialogue and cultural creation aimed at a young audience interested in the arts -especially music, poetry, and utterance in general-. The project is located in a Multipurpose Room at the former military barracks of Conde Duque. It is an initiative of the Masquepalabras Collective, which manages it in collaboration with an assembly of young people, who design an autonomous and independent program. “Un cuarto en llamas” hosts a variety of cultural creation activities including concerts, conferences, workshops, performances, poetry readings, theater, videoart, debates, dance, streamings, etc.
The Multipurpose Room at Conde Duque is an open space with a basilica-like floor plan defined by three bays of granite columns, delimited by brick walls. As it is a listed building, all interventions on the pre-existing architecture are limited, prohibiting any alteration of the original elements or the mounting of pieces by means of holes or chemical adhesives.
How to convert the solemn materiality of this room into a space for poetic and artistic creation, how to transform its rigid configuration into a place under permanent construction that functions as a laboratory for experimentation and a community of communities, and how to do so without altering the building? To respond to these considerations, the project develops two complementary strategies: “Touchless design,” and “Furniture Feat.” Continue reading Villalba . Casanovas

Urban Cabinets Series . Madrid

Urban Cabinets is a series of domestic renovation projects exploring design strategies around the notion of ‘furniture-architecture’, or ‘furnitecture’. In each of them, a family of ‘furnishings-turned-spaces’ generates domesticities halfway between these two scales. The furniture grows, it becomes XXL and is thought of in architectural terms. Value is placed on custom, hand-made materials and artisanal products from small companies, whose final in-situ execution will create a dialogue between the different trades in each field. 01. Multi-species architecture.
Eva, Carlos, two Belgian Malinois – Bicho and Bomba –, Harris the owl, five swift families, six kestrel families, and twenty sparrows, are all companion species. They live and learn together in this building, thirty kilometers west of Madrid. Sitting in amongst fields, in a rural environment transformed over recent decades by urban development and intensive pesticide-reliant agriculture, Educan School is trialing ways to recover the conditions of the ecosystem. The territory of Cercedilla, a municipality located 57 kilometers from Madrid in the Sierra de Guadarrama, has been shaped by the three countryside-to-city migrations of the last decades. During the past decade, a new type of rural inhabitant has emerged, who is at the same time urban: a population that returns to the countryside without having left the city.
