Located in a residential area close to Lausanne and Lake Geneva, this plot was previously occupied by an urban villa comprising two apartments, which was demolished. This new residential building houses three apartments, including a triplex apartment intended for the owner, thanks to its optimal use of form and building regulation compliance. These regulations specify ceiling heights and permit an attic, interpreted formally here to add a storey and therefore gain additional living space. The rounded form is a reaction to the motley, mediocre context of this residential district on the periphery of Lausanne. Continue reading LOCALARCHITECTURE

The little town of Cully is known for its jazz festival and its magnificent landscape of vineyard terraces overlooking Lake Geneva – yet it is, at the same time, a port and fishing area, as evidenced by the new boatyard which opened in the spring of 2020. Supported by the municipality, which wanted to preserve this traditional activity connected with the lake, the project was developed in discussion with the Lavaux district’s advisory committee, charged with upholding the quality of the built environment in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. This new healthcare centre is located in a distinctive landscape. Along with Château de la Corbière and its church it forms a new ensemble integrated within an agricultural estate overlooking Lake Neuchâtel. With its low-level volumes it respects the existing buildings and topography, opening out generously towards the lake and the Jura Mountains. The new building connects with the existing medical centre, combining with it to form a single articulated whole that engages in a dialogue with its environment. The architecture and the surrounding landscape intermesh in the folds of the building’s form, seeking balance. An interplay of privacy and openness to the landscape lies at the heart of this complex and organic architecture. Continue reading LOCALARCHITECTURE

Located at the western edge of Lausanne’s central Le Flon district, this hotel building presents a monolithic mi- neral block that blends with the site’s industrial heritage. Utilising the template provided by the district’s street plan to optimum effect, the design echoes the dense urban grid patterns characteristic of Le Flon’s traditional warehouses and completes the square from which it is accessed. The four façades are uniform in appearance, their repeat motifs created by prefabricated concrete units. The design reflects the individual room modules, creating a continuous pattern of facets and folds across the building’s four sides. At ground level, geometric pillars tapering towards the base balance this massive carapace on more delicate points. Continue reading LOCALARCHITECTURE
