Often the subtlest of outcomes begin with the most determined interventions. In this case, a three-level void was carved from the existing terrace to provide a shaft of light from the roof to the ground floor and a house a suspended open stair up to the rooftop extension.

A previously derelict garden forms the singular focal point of this heritage listed terrace house. A transparent room was submerged into a new garden and cast in black to form an abstract silhouette against the landscape. The sky was then allowed in via an opening carved into its canopy. As part of the City of Sydney’s 1970 initiative to reinstate native vegetation cleared to make way for the expansion of the city, native saplings were offered to the general public free of charge. One of the remnants of this initiative, a 20m high Spotted Gum, is central to this project and forms a natural counterpoint to the accumulated urban density of Erskineville.
