Uniquely situated around a spacious urban grove on Kapellenweg in Vienna’s 22nd district is a residential estate which, conceptually and aesthetically, is modeled on the municipal housing of the traditional Viennese Gemeindebau. Conceived as a large courtyard estate, a clear and self-confident ensemble emerges: the Kapellenhof. Here 450 new residential units were completed to designs by AllesWirdGut and feld72, whose collaborative planning gave special attention to the potentials of the location—views and greenery. In the Austrian alpine town of Bludenz in Vorarlberg, feld72 have completed the housing development Maierhof. The estate is situated within a community characterized by agriculture, old stables, single-family homes, and multi-story residential buildings. Dividing the volume into several small units is a concept, which has already proven to be successful in feld72’s South Tyrolean residential projects in Kaltern and Eppan and was repeated in Bludenz. The result is an ensemble of eight three-story buildings, with dimensions based on the original listed building – the “Zürcherhaus”. The houses, simply designed as compact cubes, appear identical at first glance. Nevertheless, no building is like the other. Each of the eight structures is differently aligned and sized to enable versatile visual relationships and to strengthen the village-like character. The basic condition for the design was to create a building that fits in with the surroundings but doesn’t negate its contemporary reference. The building is harmonious in integration without being subordinated to the main theme – self-evident and uncontrived. The spatial qualities of Niederolang as a village are adopted and further developed as pattern. Whether in typology or atmosphere, the new building aspires to be sensuously embedded in its location;meanwhile its architecture ensures that it actssimultaneously as an intermediary between two worlds (tradition and contemporary life) – yet also as a pointer to the future. The idea behind the Herzberg development is to create a built structure which combines a variety of residential offerings into one neighborhood that facilitates different ways of living.
This objective was pursued on both an urban-planning and on an architectural level. For one thing, the estate comprises several widely different urbandesign typologies:
There is the lawn with several point block buildings scattered on it; the residential courtyard building with access balconies, or the street and plaza with a multi-family townhouse.
This collage structure makes the estate mediate in the urban fabric between the colony of small-scale single-family houses on the West side and a shopping mall to the East.
For another thing, the buildings are terraced on the upper storeys, which creates different living and outdoor situations from floor to floor.
The range of apartment types thus created spans from the singleperson rooftop apartment with a large terrace to flexible (blended) family apartments with living rooms from which one or two temporary
bedrooms may easily be partitioned off if needed, and to assisted-living homes for children without families.
The color design re-unifies the resultant diversity into one coherent neighborhood and provides it with an urban identity of its own. Continue reading AllesWirdGut . feld72
