Located in Kew, the project is perched upon an escarpment overlooking the banks and bends of the Birrarung. This site holds together the deep age and weathered timelessness of the river and the exposed rock faces that frame it, with pockets of distinct architectural heritage tucked into the hills and hollows of the area. Fenwick was conceived as a broken mass of three distinct forms straddling this zone between residential street and bluff, with each volume shaped and scaled to appear as a small cohesive series of buildings within the streetscape of equal scale to the surrounding homes. The Mossy Point House required a robust design methodology to respond to its modest budget while maintaining an acutely defined relationship to its interior and the surrounding landscape. The simple cement-sheet cladding references the smooth, silvery bark of towering Spotted Gum trees that surround the house, while echoing the tiny ‘fibro’ shack that was the original occupant of the site. Presenting as a single-storey building, the home is perched on a series of parallel block-work walls and was evolved to mediate between the built, the natural and the nuances of contemporary liveability. After an in-depth community consultation process, and after a series of design review sessions with the Dja Dja Wurrung traditional owners, our concept design thoughts for Bendigo Art Gallery evolved, surrendering the earlier gestural studies which privileged a highly formal presentation to the street, typical of its colonial era neighbours. We then developed a woven façade language open to all sides, yielding to allow people and landscape alike to flow under through to the gallery’s welcoming interior. Continue reading Edition Office
