As part of the G1015 Zwin Nature Center project, the tourist infrastructure on the Dutch side of the nature reserve is also renewed. The old beach pavilion is being demolished, except for the foundation plate. The existing closed building volume makes way for a light steel canopy construction under which a narrow volume acts as a windshield. This wooden wall opens up a series of sanitary rooms at its rear. When the city of Ghent organized a contest in 2010 for a new city library, the city had a rather extensive wish list. The new building had to house a library, meeting rooms and a café overlooking the city, as well as offices and laboratories for the University of Ghent and a center for new media (IMEC). Yet the new building also had to become a worthy architectural sparring partner of Henry Van de Velde’s nearby masterpiece the “Boekentoren” (book tower) – the university library -, as well as play a vital element in the regeneration of the dilapidated neighbourhood as a place of gathering for local residents. Wat wordt behouden en wat wordt veranderd in dit monumentale complex heeft veel te maken met de inspirerende kracht, de ziel van dit bijzondere historische en industriële complex. Zoeken naar de potentie van de plek en het gebouw, waarbij het vroegere gebruik als treinfabriek en het toekomstige gebruik als o.a. kantoorgebouw niet los van elkaar kunnen worden gezien. Het ontwerp staat in het teken van een lange termijn visie voor de hallen. De Van Gendthallen, een platform voor makers, vormt de basis om te komen tot een nieuw aantrekkelijk, leefbaar en duurzaam gerestaureerd complex, grenzend aan het centrum van Amsterdam.
