Although the open space behind the church of sv. Jurij seems to be self-evident these days, it was never intended to be a city square. The renovation proposal of the SNG Drama focuses on 2 primary goals: compremensive spatial and technical renovation of the existing building and keeping the same expressivenes of the existing building built in 1911. The new extension is designed to emphasize the qualities of the historical building and it’s surroundings. One of the more important aspects of the design is the facade – it is designed as an uniform shell, presenting a neutral backdrop to the existing part of the building. The facade, drawing inspiration from the theater curtains, is very reserved, without bigger highlights and differentiations which could draw attention from the historical building. As the building is situated in an extremely sensitive part of the Arboretum Debeli rtič, the main concern of this project was devoted to the relationship between the existing natural environment and the built. Architecture can create a connection to nature only by representing its compositional contrary.
