Owners of large Slovenian post-war suburban houses often took inspiration from older and more prestigious city villas when designing their premises. However, unlike their inspirations, these structures were far simpler in terms of materials and architecture, lacking in excessive luxury and the spacious interiors of the past. Floor plans are typically fragmented into a multitude of small, disconnected rooms arranged around a central staircase. Apartment With a Tropical Garden . Ljubljana

The renovation of a small apartment for a young professional is located near the city center of Ljubljana, in one of the green modernist neighborhoods that gradually began to surround the city center after WW2. The distinctive quality of this modernist apartment is in its spatial freedom as it only features two load-bearing walls, thus enabling completely arbitrary scheduling of living programs. House above the valley . Cerknica

The residential house is located on the brink of a forest, on a hillside above Cerknica field. From here, views of the beautiful Cerknica intermittent lake open up. It was precisely the breathtaking views that served as the basis for designing the architectural idea. The house is nestled parallel to the hillside. It was designed as an elongated volume with steep gable roof. It opens up towards the valley via grand panoramic window, while remaining predominantly closed off towards the forest. Rožna Dolina was known for a long time as the most prestigious villa district in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. However, as early as the 1930s, its periphery slowly began to spontaneously fill with low-quality housing. Today these poorly maintained houses are surrounded by overgrown gardens, woodsheds, workshops and are affecting the overall aesthetic, functional, and hygienic conditions of this once important urban district. In this degraded part of the city, the process of gradual re-urbanization is currently taking place. It has started in the socialist period some 60 years ago with an extensive demolition of the existing urban fabric and the construction of new massive blocks of flats. Today it is continued with an erecting of an increasing number of new buildings, either in the form of luxurious villas blocks or individual exclusive modern villas. Continue reading Arhitektura
