The buildings of the cultural and community premises of Paris Diderot University fit into the undeveloped, southwest area of the Flour Market which was recently converted by Nicolas Michelin and Associates Agency. A break between the Flour Market and the new building is preserved. It respects the existing building and accentuates the slenderness of the tower. The two, independent buildings coexist completely. The signal-like extension stands out of its context by means of its evolving shape. It is a sensitive, delicate object, treated simply to avoid rivalry with the strong presence of the Flour Market. On the contrary it acts as a light, gravitational counterpoint. An architectural dialectic and emulation come into play much like a castle and its keep, both intrinsically inseparable. A l’angle de deux axes forts, face à une place et en contact visuel avec la zone du Fort d’Aubervilliers, l’opération envisagée est un carrefour urbain. Il joue un rôle primordial dans l’image du renouveau du quartier et doit être l’un des vecteurs d’harmonisation du urbain et architectural. A l’image de la ville, le projet se compose de strates dont l’effet résulte de différents ordonnancements blancs englobant un volume principal sombre.
Le bâtiment orchestre les différentes échelles de la ville: la strate topographique des commerces fortement liée au sol, la strate arborée et basse apparentée à l’habitat faubourien et la strate haute plus aérienne, en référence aux tours. Le traitement de chaque strate joue avec les perceptions extérieures et intérieures tout en garantissant la cohérence globale.
Ce projet porte les ambitions symboliques et fonctionnelles de la ville du 21ème siècle et apparait comme une icone environnementale du quartier
