Located in Bañares, La Rioja, the paio for Elena answers to the need of creaing an indeterminate space that delves into the depths of the typological transformaions suffered after the COVID-19. This new place is confirmed as a constant threshold between interior and exterior. A sort of Perysilum that explores the typology of the tradiional paio house in the country, extracing from the built memory of the site a series of relaional guidelines that help to configure an interior paradise. The building is divided into two volumes forming an L, one oriented E-W, and the other N-S. The typologies, with two and three bedrooms, are resolved with double orientation dwellings and the structure of parallel 20cm thick load-bearing walls of marés sandstone that provide inertia to passively cool in summer, as support for the sea ​​breezes cross ventilation (Embat/Terral). The Christoph Merian Foundation (CMS) sought to consolidate the various departments currently housed at their headquarters in Basel’s historic old town. This was to be achieved by moving into a new building that would replace the former dental clinic on a site in the grounds behind the property at St. Alban-Vorstadt 12. An innovative timber structure over three floors would provide a state-of-the-art working environment in keeping with today’s requirements of open communication and flexible teamwork. Recalling the enclosed moorland farmsteads of the West Country, this single storey courtyard house for a farm manager nestles into the wooded corner of a field. With only a mile to the Atlantic coast, the building looks to protect from the elements by adopting an introverted courtyard house typology; the two arms of its L-shape plan sheltering a south facing garden. Although by necessity the house is close to the neighbouring livestock barn, its domesticity does not intrude into the agricultural setting, asserting its presence without diminishing the character of the field.
