As a confederation based on common sense more than on common history, Switzerland uses its national exhibitions, the “expos“, as platforms to regularly refresh its national narrative. Earlier expos revolved around identity and national defense (1939), progress and innovation (1964) or creativity and the arts (2002). The Expo27 will focus on our lives and living environment (“Lebensraum”): It will look at landscape, space and resources, and the challenge to develop ideas, institutions and infrastructures necessary for their long-term, collective use. Duggan Morris Architects were approached by the owners of No. 3 The Hexagon, Fitzroy Park, who were in search of a vision to revive the original architectural value of their house, diminished overtime by a variety of architectural interventions. The house forms part of a semi­rural area along a private road, inside the Highgate Conservation Area, containing period properties of historic relevance, which through time have been complemented with contemporary houses; No. 3 The Hexagon is noted in the Conservation Area guidelines as being a ‘Positive Building’, giving it an importance of character for the area. Roche Building 1, its new office building, opened in Basel. It will be the workplace for around 2’000 employees. Construction works for the 178-meter high-rise started in October 2010. The total costs were 550 million Swiss francs. Building 1, which is in keeping with the architectural idiom set forth by Roche, is the starting point for the further development of the Roche headquarters in Basel.
