The major construction work for the Art Gallery’s expansion is now complete, with the new building on track to open its doors on Saturday 3 December.

Designed by SANAA, the new building almost doubles the space for art.

The new building celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, with the museum internationally renowned collection showcased in a permanent gallery on entrance level. Three art pavilions with new galleries, a 250-metre rammed earth wall sweeping through two floors, and a spectacular art space created from a decommissioned WWII oil tank, are among the new building’s highlights.

Argentine-Peruvian artist Adrián Villar Rojas is the inaugural artist commissioned for the Tank, located on the lowest level of our new building.
