Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos obtains the first prize in the competition for the extension of the Ice Rink Sports Centre in Berlin.
The jury of the competition for the Extension of the Ice Rink Sports center in Berlin has awarded the First Prize to the project of Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos. Located in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg, the High Performance Skate Centre will be expanded with a new building that meets the functional and technical requirements demanded, transforming the public outdoor space to provide a new identity in the urban context. Nieto Sobejano winning project is conceived as an independent volume, smaller in size, but similar to the shape of the existing ice rink, thus establishing a homothetic relationship with the main building. The dynamism and elegance of speed skating are reflected in the dramatic, elongated proportions of the new floating volume defined by continuous horizontal metal shutters, reminiscent of the curved space of the ice rink.
