Located in a small coastal town in Tarragona, Casa CLO sits on a sloping plot, adapting to the topography and existing wood to create comfortable living spaces among the tree canopies.
The site has rocky ground and a very steep slope, with access only from its lowest point. From the highest part of the site, the sea can be glimpsed in the distance, filtered through the pine forest. The clients, a family from Barcelona, acquired this plot to build their second home, with the intention of gradually spending more time in the tranquillity of the forest and close to the sea. They were looking for a house that could engage with its surroundings and, being familiar with the studio’s philosophy, gave us the freedom to define both the design strategy and the material approach.
The existing trees, the slope and planning regulations shaped the proposal. Any significant earthworks would have been extremely costly, and for this reason the programme was organised into three volumes arranged at different levels in the upper part of the plot, in order to take advantage of the sea views. The placement of these volumes responds to the position of the existing trees to avoid felling them, resulting in a slight rotation in plan that gives the overall composition a more organic configuration.
We worked with a timber structure in which the entire load is transferred to ten columns, allowing the intervention on the ground to be limited to just ten point foundations. This lightweight structure echoes the verticality of the forest and brings it into the interior of the house.
Planning regulations required an excavation along the street edge, which was used to accommodate the parking area. From there, a stair along the side of the plot leads up to the upper part of the site, first reaching the swimming pool and finally the entrance terrace. Upon entering the house, one arrives at a double-height dining space and kitchen. This large space visually connects the shared areas of the three volumes. A metal staircase provides access to the remaining levels, first leading to a second floor with a double-height study and a bedroom, and finally to two additional bedrooms on the top floor.

Ubicada en una pequeña localidad costera de Tarragona, la casa CLO crece sobre un terreno empinado y boscoso, adaptándose a la topografía y la vegetación existente para ofrecer espacios confortables entre las copas de los árboles. La parcela posee un suelo rocoso y una pendiente muy pronunciada, con acceso únicamente en la parte más baja del terreno. Desde lo alto, se puede observar el mar a lo lejos, tamizado por el pinar. Los clientes, una familia de Barcelona, adquirió esta porción de tierra para construir su segunda residencia, con el plan de empezar lentamente a pasar más tiempo en la tranquilidad del bosque y la cercanía del mar. Ellos buscaban construir una vivienda que respondiera al entorno, y conociendo la filosofía del estudio nos dieron rienda suelta para proponer la estrategia y materialidad. Los árboles existentes, la pendiente y la normativa orientaron la propuesta. Cualquier movimiento de tierras resultaba muy costoso, por lo que distribuimos el programa en tres volúmenes situados a distintos niveles, en la parte más alta de la parcela, para aprovechar las vistas al mar. La implantación de estos volúmenes se adapta a los árboles para evitar talarlos, generando un giro en planta que aporta una configuración orgánica al conjunto. Trabajamos con una estructura en madera, donde todo el peso descarga sobre diez pilares, permitiendo limitar la intervención en el terreno a solo diez bases puntuales. Esta estructura ligera replica la propia verticalidad del bosque y la lleva a la altura de los espacios. Los árboles existentes, la pendiente y la normativa guiaron la estrategia del proyecto. Cualquier movimiento para nivelar el terreno era muy costoso, por lo cual decidimos distribuir el programa en tres volúmenes en diferentes niveles en lo más alto del terreno para aprovechar las vistas al mar. A su vez, la implantación de estos volúmenes se adapta a los árboles existentes para evitar su derribo, generando un giro en la planta que otorga una configuración orgánica en el conjunto. Por normativa, tuvimos que realizar una excavación en la línea de calle, que aprovechamos para ubicar el aparcamiento. Desde allí, una escalera situada en el lateral de la parcela permite ascender hasta la parte superior del terreno, conectando primero con la piscina y finalmente con la terraza de acceso. Al entrar en la vivienda se encuentra el comedor a doble altura y la cocina. Este gran espacio conecta visualmente las áreas comunes de los tres volúmenes. Una escalera metálica da acceso a las otras tres plantas, conduciendo primero a un segundo nivel donde se sitúan un estudio a doble altura y una habitación, y a dos habitaciones más en la última planta.
