Currently under construction in New York, our 1014 Fifth Avenue project is transforming an historic townhouse into the new home for 1014, a cultural organisation fostering cross-disciplinary connections between Germany and the USA.
Early investigation into the historic fabric revealed the use of clay tile blocks for self-bearing partitions and linings, although they were hidden from view. Commonly used at the time of the building’s construction, clay tile blocks are rarely used anymore. For the rear extension, now well underway, we chose to reinterpret the clay blocks as both a structural and visual material. Working with sandkuhlclay, we developed custom clay block tiles with colours attuned to the new brick façades, creating both material and historic continuity with the townhouse. The project is set to complete in 2026.
