El Termet, a privileged place in Vila-real where its pine forest cradles the Mijares River. A place from the past that shelters the Hermitage of its municipal patron saint.
A modern place that, under the motto “Plenty of air and plenty of sun,” Eugenio Cendoya dreamed of as a Garden-City.
A contemporary place, sensitive to public, inclusive, and energetic will, which redefines its surroundings with a new pavilion. Plenty of air and plenty of sun, Pinus halepensis, rendered walls, partition vaults, handcrafted brick, wooden joinery… El Termet, a place in serene dialogue with its environment and history that looks at new times with renewed optimism. The project is located in a privileged enclave of Vila-Real, the Termet natural park. Its landscape value comes from a natural environment composed of a majestic pine forest that embraces the meander of the Mijares River as it passes through Vila-Real. Its heritage richness is represented both by the popular architecture of the 16th-century Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Gracia, the municipal patron saint, as well as by the Staircase and the Municipal Hostel which, under the motto “Plenty of air and plenty of sun” (1932), were part of Eugenio Cendoya’s ambitious Garden-City project, interrupted by the outbreak of the Civil War (1936).

The hostel, used as such until recently, took advantage of the recent events of COVID-19 and the War in Ukraine to provide shelter for health and humanitarian emergencies. Therefore, energetically conditioning the Hostel, creating a new flexible pavilion that complements the existing residential uses, and redefining the new boundaries with its immediate environment, represents an unbeatable opportunity to reactivate this public and inclusive facility, located in the heart of nature.
The process begins by recovering the original volume, eliminating accumulated additions over time; façades, balconies, and roofs are repaired, and the wooden joinery is rehabilitated, replacing hardware and glass with others of higher performance, making the Hostel more energy-efficient and more recognizable from a historical and constructive point of view.

The new Pavilion (Cendoya) aims to “bring” the old Hostel into the 21st century through a quiet and friendly dialogue in which the new originates from the old, and the old is updated. A lintel from the Hostel in the form of a relieving arch is extruded and added in successive bays, forming a new arcade of partition vaults that cantilever towards the square, articulating the Staircase-Hermitage-Hostel complex.

This roof, connected to the hostel only at its access bay, as if by an umbilical cord, is separated around the rest of the perimeter to create a space of respect “between” the buildings and of relationship “between” people.

The partition vaults that form the roof are supported by a light metallic structure to which a solid pine wood joinery is attached on its underside. The access doors feature steel handles corded with leather that offer a warm welcome to the user.

The floor plane, made of the same handcrafted solid brick as the roof, extends around the perimeter of the hostel, eliminating architectural barriers and accommodating its immediate environment. Stairs, benches, railings, waste bins, luminaires, tree pits, gargoyles, and drains are designed to accompany and intensify the relationship between the landscape, the facilities themselves, and people.

El Termet, lugar privilegiado de Vila-real donde su pinada mece al Mijares. 
Lugar pasado que acuna el Ermitorio de su patrona municipal. 
Lugar moderno que bajo el lema “Mucho aire y mucho sol”, soñó Eugenio Cendoya como Ciudad-Jardín. 
Lugar contemporáneo, sensible a la voluntad pública, inclusiva y energética, que redefine su entorno con un nuevo pabellón.
Mucho aire y mucho sol, Pinus halepensis, muros enfoscados, bóvedas tabicadas, ladrillo artesanal, carpinterías de madera…
El Termet, lugar en sereno diálogo con su entorno e historia que mira con renovado optimismo los nuevos tiempos.

El proyecto se encuentra ubicado en un enclave privilegiado de Vila-Real, el paraje natural del Termet. Su valor paisajístico se debe a un entorno natural compuesto de una majestuosa pinada que abraza el meandro del río Mijares a su paso por Vila-Real. Su riqueza patrimonial queda representada tanto por la arquitectura popular del Ermitorio de Nuestra Señora de Gracia del s.XVI, patrona municipal, como por la Escalinata y el Albergue Municipal que bajo el lema "Mucho aire y mucho sol" (1932), formaban parte del ambicioso proyecto de Ciudad-Jardín de Eugenio Cendoya, interrumpido por el estallido de la guerra civil (1936). 
El albergue, usado como tal hasta hace poco, ha aprovechado los recientes acontecimientos del COVID-19 y de la Guerra en Ucrania para dar cobijo a emergencias sanitarias y humanitarias. Por ello, acondicionar energéticamente el Albergue, crear un nuevo pabellón flexible que complemente los usos habitacionales existentes y redefinir los nuevos límites con su entorno inmediato, supone una oportunidad inmejorable para reactivar este equipamiento público e inclusivo, ubicado en plena naturaleza.  
Se comienza por recuperar el volumen original eliminando añadidos acumulados a lo largo del tiempo, se reparan fachadas, balcones, cubiertas y se rehabilitan las carpinterías de madera, sustituyendo herrajes y vidrios por otros de mayores prestaciones, haciendo el Albergue más eficiente desde el punto de vista energético y más reconocible desde el punto de vista histórico y constructivo. 
El nuevo Pabellón (Cendoya), pretende “traer” al s. XXI el antiguo Albergue mediante un tranquilo y amable diálogo en el que lo nuevo parte de lo antiguo y lo antiguo se actualiza. Un dintel del Albergue en forma de arco de descarga se extrusiona y adiciona en sucesivas crujías conformando una nueva arcada de bóvedas tabicadas voladas hacia la plaza que articula el conjunto Escalinata-Ermitorio-Albergue.
Esta cubierta unida al albergue solamente en su crujía de acceso, como si de un cordón umbilical se tratara, se separa en el resto del perímetro para crear un espacio de respeto “entre” los edificios y de relación “entre” las personas.
Las bóvedas tabicadas que conforman la cubierta se sustentan sobre una ligera estructura metálica a la que se adosa en su envés una carpintería de madera maciza de pino, en cuyas puertas de acceso, unas manillas de acero encordadas con cuero dan una cálida bienvenida al usuario.
El plano del suelo, el mismo ladrillo macizo artesanal que forma la cubierta se extiende por el perímetro del albergue eliminando barreras arquitectónicas y acomodándose a su entorno inmediato. Escaleras, bancos, barandillas, papeleras, luminarias, alcorques, gárgolas y sumideros, se piensan para acompañar e intensificar la relación entre el paisaje, los propios equipamientos y las personas.
