The Kunstmuseum Bern is set to undergo a comprehensive renovation and a large-scale expansion. The focus will be on both the careful restoration of the Stettler building and the creation of a new extension that will significantly impact the cityscape. Together, the extension and the Stettler building will create new public spaces and integrate the museum into the urban fabric, which consists of public pathways, passages, and squares in the historic old town of Bern.
Additionally, a new relationship will be established between the street area and the Aare River, transforming the current rear facade of the Stettler building into another main facade by adding a spacious city terrace. This prominent location at the boundary between the dense old town and the riverbank will be highlighted. The new building will add a contemporary element to the characteristic silhouette of the Bern old town.·
