With the ambition of becoming the European Capital of Culture in 2028, the Rouen Normandy Metropolis is developing its urban planning program “Heart of the Metropolis” through the rehabilitation of the city center, which includes the creation of a “museum district.” In this strong political context, the rehabilitation of the museum building aims to unify the collections of the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Antiquities.
Beyond a desire for innovative and educational programming, the project site is an old religious convent, with its cloister listed as a Historical Monument. The overall design is enhanced by the opening of the cloister and framed by a landscaped garden, which is an integral part of the call for proposals. Thus, the cultural renewal of the city will involve a balance of restoration, rehabilitation, and extension of buildings dating from the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries.·
