Vertical Emptiness. A steel frame tower . Basel

Dafina Zariqi

Rosental, is the city of Basel’s oldest chemical site, developed by the Geigy company in 1858. In 2016, Canton Basel purchased part of the site to transform it and open it to the public, envisioning the construction of new high-rise buildings. My proposal is to participate in this development with a program for one of the future towers.

The tower is conceived as an open building, both perceptually and spatially, using structural steel elements that reflect the neighbourhood’s industrial past. The structure includes primary beams supported by secondary beams, with vertical circulation elements and X-shaped supports strategically placed to ensure stability.

The structural proposal aims to blend innovation, sustainability and respect for the site’s industrial past. By integrating public, office and residential spaces, the tower will become a dynamic and vital part of Basel’s urban fabric, contributing to the revitalisation and future development of the area. The project recognises the historical significance of Rosental and adds a vibrant, future-oriented dimension to the cityscape.
