The project is located in a residential area of Sant Cugat del Vallès, in a consolidated suburb, made up mainly of small, low-density multi-family buildings, surrounded by gardens and a diverse architecture that reflects its time, from the 1950s to the present day.
Context
The family that owns one of these blocks commissioned us to complete the construction of the building that was left unfinished in 2006, as well as to refurbish the existing building in order to update the performance of the envelope.
The complex is situated on a rectangular plot of about 500m2, totally flat, facing the street on one side and surrounded by isolated buildings on the sides and at the back.
The existing volume, consisting of a ground floor and two above ground car park, had a staircase on one side, strategically placed to facilitate the construction of the new volume arranged symmetrically and thus complete the building.
The extension of the building involves three new flats of about 60m2, one on each floor, in addition to the two existing ones. In total 5 dwellings.
Metric
The existing 6×17 metre building allows for the aconstruction of a new symmetrical volume, separated by the 2 m wide free-standing staircase.
However, the buildability consumed in the existing building does not permit the construction of the same surface area, and it is the front and back terraces that complete the ocupation to make the volumes exactly the same.
The oraganisation of the new dwellings is resolved by means of a central nucleus of services that separates the day zone fom the night zone while visually communicating the terraces situated on the opposite sides of the dwelling. This reinforces the south and north orientations, favouring wider views and cross ventilation.
System
The new construction is resolved as a system consisting of a double skin formed by a box, closed, inside another box, permeable, larger than the first.
The first box, a closed envelope, built with prefabricated plywood panels, provides us with the structural function, and at the same time an enclosure with optimum energy, thermal comfort and acoustic qualities typical of the material.
The second box, a permeable envelope, is formed by a tubular structure supporting the terraces, the prefabricated façade finish panels and the lattices that serve as a transition space, providing solar and visual protection and allowing larger openings in the more exposed façade, which is also better oriented.
The existing volume is also sheathed with this second box, which, without having a structural function, houses.
Materiality
A precise construction, made up of light elements of dry construction, basically steel and glass, are the materials that receive and transform the light into effects of sun and shadow, reflections and transparencies.
The combination of these materials makes it possible to create spaces where sunlight interacts dynamically with the structure. The steel elements, depending on their shape and arrangement, can cast different shadows on the interior and exterior surfaces. These shadows change constantly throughout the day and the seasons, creating a constantly evolving visual spectacle.

Contexto: El proyecto se sitúa en una zona residencial de Sant Cugat del Vallès, en un ensanche consolidado, formado mayoritariamente por pequeños edificios plurifamiliares de baja densidad, rodeados de jardín y de una arquitectura diversa reflejo de su tiempo que va desde los años 50 hasta la época actual. La familia propietaria de uno de estos bloques, nos encarga completar la construcción del edificio que quedó sin ejecutarse en el año 2006, así como reformar la construcción existente para actualizar las prestaciones de la envolvente. El conjunto se sitúa en una parcela rectangular de unos 500m2 totalmente plana con frente a la calle en uno de sus lados y rodeado de edificaciones aisladas en los laterales y en la parte posterior. El volumen existente, formado por planta baja y dos sobre un aparcamiento enterrado, disponía de una escalera en un lateral, situada estratégicamente para facilitar la construcción del nuevo volumen dispuesto de forma simétrica y así completar el edificio. La ampliación del edificio supone tres nuevas viviendas de unos 60 m2, una en cada planta, que se añaden a las dos existentes. En total 5 viviendas. Métrica: La construcción existente, de 6 x 17 metros, permite la construcción de un nuevo volumen simétrico, separado por la escalera exenta de 2m de ancho. Sin embargo, la edificabilidad consumida en el edificio existente no permite la construcción de la misma superficie, y son las terrazas anterior y posterior las que completan la ocupación hasta hacer los dos volúmenes exactamente iguales. La organización de las nuevas viviendas se resuelve mediante un núcleo central de servicios que separa la zona de día de la zona de noche a la vez que comunica visualmente las terrazas situadas en los entremos opuestos de la vivienda. Se refuerza así las orientaciones a sur y norte, favoreciendo las visuales más amplias y la ventilación cruzada, Sistema: La nueva construcción se resuelve como un sistema formado por una doble piel formada por una caja, cerrada, dentro de otra caja, permeable, de dimensiones mayores a la primera. La primera caja, una envolvente cerrada, construida con paneles prefabricados de madera contra laminada, nos aporta la función estructural, ya la vez de cerramiento con unas optimas cualidades energéticas, de confort térmico, acústico propias del material. La segunda caja, una envolvente permeable, está formada por una estructura tubular sobre la que se sustentan las terrazas, los paneles prefabricados de acabado de fachada, y las celosías que sirven de espacio de transición, de protección solar y visual permitiendo unas mayores aberturas en la fachada más expuesta pero a la vez mejor orientada. El volumen existente, se enfunda también con esta segunda caja que sin tener función estructural, alberga. Materialidad: Una construcción precisa, formada por elementos ligeros de construcción en seco, básicamente acero y vidrio, son los materiales que reciben y transforman la luz en efectos de sol y sombra, reflejos y transparencias. La combinación de estos materiales permite crear espacios donde la luz del sol interactua de manera dinamica con la estructura. Los elementos de acero, dependiendo de su forma y disposición, peuden proyectar sombras diferentes sobre las superficies interiores y exteriores. Estas sombras cambian constantemente a lo largo del dia y de las estaciones, creando un espectaculo visual en constante evolución.
