And it moves on more and more. And on schedule. 66.000m2 of surface but since the more than average floor ceiling height up to 500.000m3.
This project was a turn in practice. If the foreseen budget was like only 1/3 of what a decent but normal budget would have been for an all over recovery the call of the competition envisioned only the 12.000m2 tall middle lobby part of the building to become state of the art architecture as also zero energy. An extra parking level to be created under the building was the only other demand.
We made a proposal that coped differently with all this. We only needed 1/3 of the foreseen competition budget as we opened the central part to become a central park reconnecting the below and above city. No energy. No architecture. Unless the architecture of what is available.
Studying the possible future needs of use we on top stated that no extra underground parking level was needed as half of the building could be easily made available for that. Another saving.
And all this savings could now be used for practical a functional upgrade of the whole complex. An asbestos removal campaign was part.
Our interferences will be marked white as concrete protection paint or steal fire protection paint came in place. The never original colors of the building come back to become the original colors of this project.
And also: it turned – like with CARITAS / JOZEF / KARUS project – all thinking and making: the architectural aim to detail as also the idea on craftsmanship are heavily questioned since the different scale and approach at all.
In these urges of times the ‘PALAIS DES EXPO’ becomes and expo on the TURNING OF EXPECTATIONS.
