Construction work on the House of Hungarian Music, designed by Japanese star architect Sou Fujimoto, has been completed.
The House of Hungarian Music was conceived with the intention of becoming the latest in a long line of iconic Budapest buildings. The eminent Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto has created a modern and extravagant home for music. During the design stage, Fujimoto drew inspiration from both the worlds of nature and music, and these two sources are clearly evident in the details of his final design. The building’s distinctive floating roof, for example, is a wave-inspired visual representation of resonating sound, while Fujimoto also placed significant emphasis on the symbiosis of nature and the built environment. The result is a light, airy, open, accessible and harmonious building, carefully planned to the very last detail.
The House of Hungarian Music, located next to the Városliget Lake and close to Vajdahunyad Castle and the City Park Ice Rink, opens its doors by the end 2021. The building will seamlessly blend into nature as a continuation of the park itself: the external glass walls and potted roof structure provide channels for natural light to enter, so when those attending a concert will feel as though the musicians are in the park itself, playing music in the midst of the natural surroundings. The building also boasts a range of cutting-edge, environmentally friendly solutions.
The layout of the three floors of the House of Hungarian Music supports the musical offering of the institution. Yet while its three functions – museum, performance venue and musical education institution – are clearly divided, the design of the house also makes it easy to move from one to the other.
