Gut Garkau is a farm near Klingberg in the district of Ostholstein in Schleswig-Holstein. It is an example of organic building.
The building complex has been realized between 1924 and 1926 by the german architect Hugo Hering and is considered his main work.
Gut Garkau is the first example of how new formal solutions were created on a building constructed in the formal language of modern architecture as a result of agricultural use.
Innovative hygienic and operational standards were developed, such as the novel placement of animals in the cowshed.
Nevertheless, in 1973 the dairy operation was discontinued, as the small herd of cows no longer proved to be competitive and profitable.
Despite all its advantages, the new construction proved to be too rigid.
