The owner of Thiersteinerallee 7–11 and 19–21 in the Gundeldinger district in Basel is the CPV/CAP Coop Pension Fund. Together the five landmark buildings from the turn of the century form a residential perimeter block and had all been renovated at the exterior. In addition, the top floor areas of Thiersteinerallee 19 and 21 were converted resulting in an additional two maisonettes and two apartments on each floor in each building.
Additional housing was also created in the rear courtyard of Thiersteinerallee 9, which was formerly used as a merchandise handling area with a warehouse. The new volume with two new residential units on three floors is carefully integrated between the three existing firewalls with contact to each of the walls. The finely articulated spaces created in this way have very different characteristics and qualities that infuse the formerly unused rear courtyard with new life.
