Tourist and cultural centre . Antwerp
The 350m long by 200m wide Eilandje, Antwerp’s oldest port, sits at the threshold of the medieval centre of the city and its harbour district to the north and west. The proposed restoration of the Red Star Line passenger ship company buildings on the site was set to anchor the heritage of the port as a staging post for emigrants to the ‘New World’ amongst a series of neighbouring cultural and commercial developments.
A new cultural complex of three different and challenging components was proposed, each part enjoying the possibility of a degree of independence in its form and content, but with all responding to an unifying curatorial theme is of emigration and the issues surrounding cultural identity and diversity.
