The existing building of the ‘Maison des Artistes‘ is a mansion from 1870, boasting a striking eclectic façade. By removing an extension on the left side of the Maison des Artistes, we’re restoring the grandeur of the building. The new daycare and the existing Maison des Artistes are connected by a shared entrance courtyard and a recessed volume that houses shared functions (a multi-purpose hall, an emergency staircase, lift and sanitary facilities). This approach creates a cohesive yet distinct architectural ensemble, while the historic building remains prominent in the streetscape.

Connecting a daycare with an arts centre might not seem obvious, but Brons tries to create an environment where their convergence feels natural, never forced. Shared spaces serve as platforms for these interactions. The entrance courtyard acts as a gateway, offering glimpses into the daycare, the Maison des Artistes, and the neighbouring school, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. The recessed volume provides a welcoming embrace, instilling a sense of security. It sets the stage for what lies beyond, acting as a welcoming antechamber for visitors.
Within the daycare, every encounter holds educational value: whether with artists, other toddlers, passersby, or the school community, each interaction broadens children’s understanding of the world. The daycare is envisioned as a tight-knit community, where everyone participates in collective experiences. Parents are invited into the heart of the daycare, where kitchen and admnistration are also visible as a part of daily life. The cozy ambiance of this central space is complemented by a gentle staircase leading to an airy upper floor, creating a seamless transition into a new open area.
The living spaces are organised around a green patio garden that brings light, air and tranquility. Views from these spaces provide glimpses into the other living areas, the lively street, the courtyard, and the nearby school, making the children feel connected to their surroundings.
The building’s new structure is designed with non-load-bearing interior walls, ensuring flexibility for future use.
