The building ensemble next to the rapid-transit station of Kronberg is surrounded by the green of Viktoriapark. The steep slope and the challenge to bring the new buildings into unison with the scale of the surrounding buildings lead to a topographic design approach. The chamber music hall and the hotel will have a base made of natural stone that emerges from the terrain, whereas the music academy is pushed into the slope and appears merely as a stone wall. The stone walls create an exciting alternation of open and enclosed exterior spaces on the way from the train station forecourt to the interior of the quarter. Continue reading Staab Architekten

Das 5000 qm große Baugrundstück liegt malerisch an der Pegnitz, in Sichtweite des Nürnberger Altstadtmarktes. Die städtebau- liche Figur der Bebauung wurde aus dem Maßstab der historischen Innenstadt entwickelt. Sie vervollständigt die angrenzenden Altstadt- blöcke und lässt zwischen ihnen einen langgestreckten, leicht ge- schwungenen Hofraum entstehen, der vom Markt aus über ein breites Tor betreten werden kann und sich zum Ufer der Pegnitz hin öffnet. Nicht nur Passanten profitieren von dieser räumlichen Geste, sondern auch beinahe alle Nutzer des neuen Gebäudes. Die öffentliche Verbindung zur Pegnitz und zur Karlsbrücke erweitert das Wegenetz der Stadt und schafft eine ringförmige Verbindung zwischen der nördlichen und der südlichen Altstadtseite der Pegnitz. Awarded first prize in the competition for a library on the edge of the old town of St. Gallen.The simple appearing building stands in complex relation to its surroundings, both in terms of urban planning and architecture. It frames the Blumenmarkt on its western edge and leads to a public space, which is spanned by old town buildings, a listed 1950s building, and the new library. Continue reading Staab
