They converge from all corners of the city—the engineers, makers, architects, and planners—ensuring trains run on time, planes land safely, and ports remain open. Without them, the nation would come to a standstill; life’s rhythmic hum would fade into silence, and all in motion would halt. As they gather, they realize they are part of a grander whole, no longer isolated. Their new setting rises as an oasis in the city, emerging organically from the very site itself. This project represents the third installment (after 450 Warren and 9 Chapel) in a series aimed at transforming the conventional multifamily housing typology in New York. Its distinct corner location, straddling two zoning districts, heavily influences the building’s structure and layout. On one side, it aligns with a row of townhouses, rising to four stories. On Myrtle Avenue, known for its commercial activity, the building expands to accommodate six residential floors above two commercial levels. The project explores these two contrasting urban experiences, creating a structure that acts as a porous barrier, housing a tranquil inner haven that contrasts with the vibrant street life. Having long been central Basel’s only tower, the site of the Bank of International Settlement (BIS) headquarters is poised for a renaissance: New high-rises are increasingly densifying the city’s center, while the site’s southern edge, the backside of the station, will be introduced to further pedestrian infrastructure. Recognizing the site’s new urban conditions and the tower’s iconicity, for the extension of the BIS we propose a compact ecosystem that promotes public space and produces synergy between old and new. The team at SO–IL is excited to partner with Anthony & JJ Curis of Detroit’s Library Street Collective in bringing a new arts campus to the Stanton Yards marina, the latest in a multisite project supporting the city’s cultural and artistic renaissance. This new hub will extend a burgeoning arts community in the area, forming a trio with the Collective’s nearby projects at a revitalized 110-year-old church and a defunct bakery and warehouse space.
