Inspired by the Chickee – a simple shelter supported by posts, with a raised open-air floor and thatched gable roof that has been used by native tribes in Southern Florida for centuries – also this prototypical house in Coconut Grove Park hoovers lightly above the ground. Embraced by a protective layer of vegetation on all sides, the open and shaded ground floor offers an outdoor living room. Protected from possible storm surge, the elevated main floor functions as one large room, where separate zones for eating, cooking, working, and relaxation are only loosely distinguished. Before Miami’s official founding, the first settlers inhabited the “Little Hunting Grounds,” what is known as Coconut Grove today. Bordering onto Biscayne Bay, it was in this small enclave that the primeval wilderness was initially tamed to let a free-spirited community grow. In that particular context and adjacent to one of the oldest surviving bungalows from 1910, we designed a small studio with an adjacent south-facing pool. Continue reading Sauter von Moos

Built by Heinrich Flügel in 1895, the Villa Hammer is a stately neo-baroque villa in the Kleinbasel-neighborhood next to the Wettstein-Square. Despite being listed, the building was completely rundown since its last owner died and victim to a series of poorly executed renovations that destroyed large parts of the original interiors. Panton Stube | Kunsthalle Basel

The task was to permanently install a lamp by the Danish designer Verner Panton, which he had originally designed for his home, at the Kunsthalle in Basel. A corner room in the museum’s ground floor was allocated for that purpose, which adjacent and annexed to the Kunsthalle Restaurant should be used by the latter but also offer space for special events in the future.
