The sculptures are constructed from translucent sheets of pigmented acrylic in tones of grey and green, as well as red, which is a color that the artist has never previously explored in this body of work. Irwin has been experimenting with columnar forms made from transparent materials since the 1960s, and these latest works offer a survey of the current state of this important valence of his larger practice. Illusionistic, layered, and multicolored, Irwin’s columns evoke the energetic potentiality of light itself, capturing the radiance of color almost as a physical entity and gesturing to the subjective nature of experience as well as the shared conditions of human perception. Excursus: Homage to the Square³ . 2015

Excursus: Homage to the Square³, Robert Irwin’s landmark site-specific work, was originally commissioned for Dia Center for the Arts in New York City, where it was presented from 1998 to 1999. For this new installation, the numerous chambers made of mesh scrim that comprise the work are reconfigured for Dia:Beacon and are lit by intersecting fluorescent and natural light.
