In 2015 the municipality of Edegem, south of Antwerp in Belgium, asked: “How can we create a future proof library & community center, reactivate a redundant site in the heart of the historic town and create a symbol of sustainable design?” Marc Koehler Architects came up with the idea to design a multifunctional, flexible and open community center which is entirely made of massive timber (CLT) and is harmoniously integrated with the existing monumental exhibition center Huis Hellemans and its garden. For the residents of Edegem it’s an open house that invites people to meet, work, enjoy, read and experience. The open spaces that are now used as a library can be programmed with flexibility over time consisting of old and new media, relax, work and meeting spaces. The building reinvents the small-town cultural center for the digital age as a curated Landscape of opportunities for inspiration and communication. Superlofts Blok Y, a cooperative housing project in Utrecht designed by Marc Koehler Architects, wins the Private Housing category of the 2018 Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (BNA) award for Building of the Year.

Designed as an Open Building, Superloft Blok Y forms part of the ongoing Superlofts project, initiated by Marc Koehler Architects (MKA), focused on flexibility, participation and adaptability. It offered a collective of 30 homeowners a blank canvas to customise or design and build their apartments according to their needs, and actively engaged them from the outset to co-create the building and its shared spaces. A unique complex – where no two apartments are alike – results from the building’s radical flexibility, collective character and high level of sustainability. Continue reading Marc Koehler

The villa is situated in a suburban context on the edge of the Noorderplassen-West in Almere, overlooking a contemporary Dutch water and polder landscape. The panoramic view and the constant change of depth, colours and light of the sky and landscape became the main inspiration of the design. Continue reading Marc Koehler
