TRAFFIC GARDEN . Basel

The starting point for this project was an exposed-concrete building designed by the architect Erwin Glaser, which has served as a school and day-care center since its opening in 1970. The two-story pavilion is situated in a “traffic garden,” a large green space with a miniature street network where children can learn and practice the rules of the road. The structure is built into a slope at the southern end of the complex and serves as a pivot point between the quiet of the park and the urban space around it. Continue reading Lukas Raeber

The Rumelbach school facility is formally continued through the new building for the Heilpädagogische Schule (HPS), completing the campus with the new, independent school unit. As a long, thin building volume with different heights, it creates, together with the existing school block, a well-proportioned intermediate space linking with the primary school’s exterior spaces, in which children from both schools will be able to meet and mix. The new building for the Steffisburg Educational, Cultural, and Sports Complex is an extension of the school grounds, oriented toward the existing school buildings as well as the nearby Schoenau-bridge. The new volume, a freestanding square with an overhanging roof, opens out in all directions, projecting daily activities outward and providing the community with a distinctive new site.
