The Rosental site is hidden in the center of Kleinbasel; it is like a “forbidden city,” sealed off with gates and security fences. For decades the site accommodated the laboratories and administrative buildings of major companies like Geigy or Syngenta, which were once indispensable pillars of Basel’s economy. Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Vogt landscape architects have been announced as winners of the City of Hamburg’s competition for the urban development of the Grasbrook district. The former port area on the southern bank of the Norderelbe will turn into a new, central neighbourhood, with 3,000 apartments, 16,000 workplaces, and spacious recreational areas.
