This project had to solve a kind of paradox, two forces pulling in opposite directions: on the one hand, it had to comply with a Masterplan that required continuity of the public space from the hills to the river (north-south direction) resulting in a splitting of the building’s mass into two linear volumes. On the other hand, the building had to function as one single entity; so the 2 linear volumes had to be connected in the east-west direction threatening the north-south continuity of the public space. So, to respond to both forces simultaneously, we folded the ground of the public space with a slight slope that complied with the hill-river continuity and then connected the two linear volumes under the highest point of the folded ground. The proposal is basically a box within a box. There is one inner volume containing the theater that is introverted. Then there is an outer box, made of wood, given that this region is the center of the Chilean forest production. In between the two, we introduced a sequence of deep openings to allow for cross ventilation and natural light in the foyer. Given the building is located in the central civic square of Constitución, the opaque surfaces between the openings serve as projection panels and the openings as stages for public outdoor events. The Art Mill Museum is Qatar’s future museum of international modern and contemporary art developed by Qatar Museums in Doha. Due to open in 2030, the museum will transform an industrial flour mill site on the Corniche, forming a triangle with the existing Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar. In 2021 the BIS launched an international architectural competition to propose designs to develop its headquarters site. Participants were asked to come up with a design proposal which would replace the ageing buildings and provide a concept for modern facilities to accommodate the enlargement of global meetings and growth in activities as well as create a campus-like work environment for its staff and visitors.
