The project responds to phase two of the Master Plan for Jorba Castle, drawn up in 2015, continuing the recovery of the approach to the site via the northern slope of Puig de la Guàrdia. Earthworks during the archaeological excavation revealed buried structures that offered a better understanding of the castle complex and aroused interest in continuing the project. The former church of Santa Eulàlia in Gironella dates back to the mid-fourteenth century and throughout its six centuries of history it has undergone innumerable changes of use. Badia del Vallès is made up of a series of housing estates built in the early sixties that were implanted in the territory, occupying the terraces of the surrounding topography. The meeting of Carrer Bètica and Avinguda de la Mediterrània in the town is marked by a difference in level of 8.5 m. The very steep existing steps and ramp fail to offer the ease of access needed by local residents to guarantee connection between housing on the lower level and facilities in Carrer Bètica, such as the market and the schools. On the top floor of a five story building in Carrer Martínez de la Rosa we were presented with a 70 m2 dwelling in a poor state of conservation. It is characterised by its long, very narrow floor plan, some 17 metres long with a span of only 3.20 m. The opposite façades, one overlooking the street and the other onto the inner courtyard, allow good cross ventilation. The existing layout divides the space into small rooms with a narrow, dark corridor. The aim of the intervention was to redistribute the uses to optimise the available space. On the penthouse floor of a four-storey building on Carrer Verdi we find a 75 m2 dwelling dating from the mid-20th century. Its floor plan is rectangular, measuring 13 metres long with a span of 5.5 m. Practically in the middle, built against one of the party walls, is the stairwell. The two short sides are façades, one overlooking the street, with two windows and a French door, and, at the other end, by means of a gallery space, the flat is ventilated by the courtyard at the centre of the street block. The pre-existing partitions divided the space into small rooms with a dark, narrow passage. Continue reading Carles Enrich
