The project is a restoration. An operation that emphasizes the existent, recovering it and establishing new readings of a reality. Permanent elements are contemplated, as well as wall-paintings, tiles and the main spatial structures. From these elements, the change is implemented, adding value to them. The new elements follow the history of the building with the autonomy of their time, integrated in a logic of the ‘whole’, established as the sum of all its construction eras. Reabriu no Centro Histórico de Ponta Delgada, os Armazéns Cogumbreiro, o maior estabelecimento dos Açores do inicio do século XX. O edifício sofreu uma profunda intervenção, tendo como base um projeto da autoria do famoso arquiteto português Manuel Aires de Mateus, e renasce agora com todo o seu charme como alojamento local e com uma oferta de cafetaria e geladaria.

Faced with the boundless extents of the Alqueva lake, the house requires a centre: a protected courtyard embracing the water.
It uses the terrain to cast a dome that covers the social areas and is the life centre of the house. An inverted dome intersects it and creates an opening that lights the space, shaping its precise geometry and limits. The bedrooms open onto circular patios.
Amid a wide natural landscape, the scale of the house is that of the patios and superior dome. They are the sole visible elements, painted in radiant white. Continue reading Aires Mateus

A building links the higher and lower levels of the city. Through its interior we are carried from the riverside bank to Chiado hill.
