Hohlstrasse, Baslerstrasse, and Badenerstrasse, together with contiguous infrastructural buildings, large residential courtyards, commercial buildings, as well as small-scale structures, are anchored in the collective memory of the city of Zürich. In a smooth rhythm, these major axes subdivide the Letzi area of Zürich into well-proportioned urban units. Our project takes up the tradition of the large residential courtyard so typical of the vicinity. The unbroken development that runs along the plot boundary shelters the inner courtyard and residential units from street noise. Two head buildings bound a figure that encloses a spacious courtyard that is open toward the west. The ‘Freihaltezone’ (undevelopable) zone to the west and Letzi Park enhance the courtyard’s expansive feel. Continue reading Adrian Streich

Four buildings with red brick cladding house the various school facilities of the Schauenberg school under one large roof. Seven prestressed beams made of fairfaced concrete support the roof which joins the school’s divisions, creating a large complex. With its striking spatial gesture, the roof signals the school’s public importance in the district and covers an expansive schoolyard. Three square windows in the roof allow schoolchildren to see the sky. The edges of the openings are stepped, reducing the moment between the schoolyard and the universe to just a few centimetres. A large fountain reflects the sky and provides a place for the children to sit. The exposed brick façades of the wings reference traditional school construction materials. Numerous Zurich schools are made of red exposed brick, such as the Letzi school by Ernst Gisel dating from the 1950s. Continue reading Adrian Streich

The Eyhof housing estate is located in the midst of the green Albisrieden district, which is part of a garden city extending from Albisgüetli to Schlieremer Berg. Contiguous housing estates constructed in the late 1940s define the surroundings of the Eyhof. Residential buildings arranged in rows are carefully embedded in the topography, forming flowing green spaces. The neighbouring open spaces of the In der Ey and Letzi schoolhouses supplement the district’s spatial structure with park-like facilities. Scattered buildings from subsequent decades notwithstanding, the district exhibits a homogeneous architecture. Continue reading Adrian Streich
