Following an invited competition, Caruso St John has been commissioned to redevelop two residential buildings in Mühlebach, Zurich, one of which dates back to the era of the Baumeisterhäuser, a generation of houses built by the city’s master craftsmen in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The design concept is based on a historic photograph of the building at the corner of Mühlebachstrasse and Florastrasse that reveals its first incarnation as urban villa, characterised by expressive facades facing onto both streets.
The existing Baumeisterhaus will be incorporated into the new building, which will be constructed in the same spirit as its predecessor, with a timber structure, stucco walls, wooden windows and parquet flooring, and stone-clad stairwells and bathrooms.
