Trellick Tower (part of the Cheltenham Estate) is a social housing scheme in London. The tower was built by Hungarian architect Ernö Goldfinger in 1972 and is with its bare, in situ cast concrete, exaggerated building parts and smaller window openings an example of the Brutalist architectural style.
The tower was grade II* listed in the 1990’s for its original brutalist brilliance but not all original parts, interior or exterior, remain.
The project “Trellick Tower” centres around three main themes of the building: Entry, connection and common use. Through analyses and valuations of the building, four points were chosen as catalysts for the project: a joint work of restoring, transforming and adding of the courtyard, the lobby, the function room above the lobby (not currently in use) and the roof of the main building. The result is a building much closer to the original design of the architect with a more open attitude and a bigger focus on the uses of the common areas by the residents of the building.
