Where desks and meeting rooms were once planned, children now play, learn, explore, and move. The transformation of an office space in the largely vacant Messeturm Zürich into a childcare center demonstrates how existing buildings can be adapted resourcefully and sustainably to meet new societal needs.
The greatest challenge was converting a formerly rational office environment into a warm, child-friendly space. The existing column structure, fire protection requirements, and deep floor plan necessitated creative solutions to ensure openness, light, and flexibility. At the same time, it was essential to consider the urban context and design the space to be not only functional but also inspiring.
A conscious approach to materials and resources was central to the concept. Instead of extensively dismantling existing structures, they were reinterpreted:
Technical installations remained visible and were spray-painted in vibrant colors—reducing costs, maximizing ceiling height, and creating a playful aesthetic.
The column structure was not hidden but deliberately integrated into the design, resulting in zoned yet open spaces.
The linoleum flooring was laid in different color fields to provide structure and orientation, supporting children’s spatial perception.
Each group room was equipped with a flexible adjoining rest area, which can be opened or closed with large doors—a solution that allows for both retreat and community interaction. Strategically placed glass elements guide daylight deep into the space, ensuring a bright atmosphere and visual connections between different areas.
The repurposing of existing buildings plays a key role in sustainable urban development. Instead of creating new space, an existing area was revitalized and repurposed for a socially relevant function. The childcare center contributes to the vibrancy of the neighborhood and strengthens its social infrastructure.
