The project involves the refurbishment and extension of the former Anna Freud Centre, a large detached Victorian townhouse within the Fitzjohns/Netherhall Conservation Area, as well as the creation of a new studio to complement the house and garden.

Our proposal reinstates the townhouse’s original residential use, removes poor-quality later additions, and creates four new apartments around the existing solid timber staircase. The proposed layouts follow the original room arrangement and preserve the architectural features of the historic townhouse. Drawing inspiration from traditional stone bay windows, the lower floors are extended towards the garden with an open masonry structure. This simple tectonic arrangement maximises natural light and offers views across the landscaped garden.

Located to the west of the house, the studio serves as a backdrop to the garden. Its load-bearing brick structure reinterprets the adjacent boundary, creating an intimate space embedded within the surrounding landscape.
